Competitions

Basketball

February 24, 2021

This sport, played between two teams made up of five players, consists of scoring or putting the ball into a ring located 3.05 meters above the surface, achieving the winner being the team that scores the most, taking into account that each basket has a score of two or three points, depending on the position from which the shot is made.

Its duration is four periods of 10 or 12 minutes each, during that time the contact between the basketball players and the ball is with the hands. Each team will try to have possession of the ball and thus greater chances of scoring, while the opponent will try to prevent it.

Basketball (basketball in English) was born in the United States, devised by the Canadian teacher, James Naismith, who thought of an activity that could be developed indoors to avoid the cold in winter time. Since then, this sport was positioning itself, to the point that in 1932 the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) emerged; in 1936 it debuted in the professional category at the Berlin Olympic Games, and ten years later the National Basketball Association (NBA) was founded, considered the largest professional league.

Over time, this sport has developed different variants, reaching people with disabilities through wheelchair basketball, continuing with streetball and 3x3 basketball.

In Valledupar, during the XIX Bolivarian Games in 2022, the scenarios arranged are:
Coliseo Mayor Central Sports Unit
Alfonso López Square.
